I just discovered Jason de Caires Taylor and I love his dedication to art and to the environment, specifically the coral reefs. He has a very impressive website www.underwatersculpture.com . You guessed it! He puts his sculptures underwater!
Each of his sculptures, life size figures, are created from specialized materials used to promote coral life. Jason aims “to define a new era of living in a symbiotic relationship with nature.” His sculptures, which can be found in Cancun, Mexicoand Grenada, West Indies, have become huge tourist destinations. However, by drawing tourists away from the reef and toward his artwork he has relieved some of the stresses that have been put on the natural reef habitats. By placing his work in these areas of the world with great marine diversity he has created artificial reefs which serve as habitat and breeding areas for marine life as well.
I think his work is absolutely brilliant and serves such a great cause. It’s no secret at this point that our reefs are dying a slow death and will one day gone unless we do something about it, starting now. Jason has started; and he has done it in such a way that gets the attention the reefs need.
